β€œA Pyrrhic Victory is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is equivalent to defeat. Winning a Pyrrhic Victory takes a heavy toll that negates any true sense of achievement and damages long-term progress.”

Pyrrhic Victory is winning the battle but losing the war.
Pyrrhic Victory term came from Pyrrhus of Epirus, a Greek King who fought against the Romans in 280-275 B.C.
Pyrrhus aligned himself with Greek speaking city of Tarentum in Italy to attack the Romans.
First battle Pyrrhus won was in Heraclea in 280 B.C. when he attacked the Romans with over 25,000 men and 20 war elephants.
Second battle won was at Asculum in 279 B.C.
While Pyrrhus won both battles (Heraclea and Asculum), he suffered great loss of his troops including many officers and commanders that he couldn’t replace.
Romans suffered twice as many casualties but they could replace them at a much faster rate than Pyrrhus could.
Pyrrhus famous quote was β€œIf we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined.”
Eventually in 275 B.C. Pyrrhus had a setback in Battle of Beneventum, after which he called off his campaign and left Italy.
Watch out for Pyrrhic Victories in life. You may win the encounter but you’ll lose a lot more in the long run.
Life Example Pyrrhic Victory: Win an argument but destroy a relationship
Life Example Pyrrhic Victory: Win a bar fight but go to jail or worse (hospital/cemetary)
