WOT and Musharraf [Thread]
There is a lot of confusion when it comes to WOT & Musharraf's role in the post 9/11 scenario, we often hear that Pakistan had limited options Musharraf had no choice but to surrender while many claims he played a double game. -1/23
Starting with his very one claim of "Bombing Pakistan to the stone age" but Richard Armitage denied making any such threat. There is no reference to back this claim but even if we buy this Musharraf agreed to all seven demands of the US unconditionally within 48 hours. -2/23
Powell himself said that the US was surprised to see the readiness of Musharraf, even they themselves were not expecting Pakistan to agree to all 7.
Having said that coming towards the framework that Musharraf or his followers claim that it was not unconditional -3/23
1) Bases
This whole idea that India was willing to give bases doesn't work strategically, tactically & militarily. Why don't US do the same now when Pakistan has refused to offer bases? US was planning to invade Iraq soon after Afghanistan. It was impossible to open -4/23
front with nuclear-armed Pakistan.
2) Containing Indian & Israel involvement
Denying both roles doesn't fit with Musharraf's own foreign policy. Israel was never interested in the Afghan War. While India was denied India's air corridor but was allowed to establish a -5/23
strong presence in Afghanistan eventually doing the damage in a sub-conventional manner which they could have never been able to do even in a conventional war.
- Musharraf was the first Pakistani to work on normalization with Israel he was so cooperative with Israel -6/23
“As a good Jewish boy, I would have never dreamed that I would pray for the safety of General Pervez Musharraf, the president of Pakistan.”
(Shimon Peres, Israeli Foreign Minister, October 2001)
So these both points can't be considered as his success after 9/11 in WOT -7/23
3) Terrorism and Kashmir
He said he told US to exclude Kashmir then we will openly call it terrorism as the armed resistance in Kashmir is a freedom struggle. But just like the first two he later proved it wrong. When signed 2003 Loc agreement & banned all Kashmir based -8/23
armed factions under the framework of terrorism.
4) Party to war & Bases
Musharraf claimed in his first speech Pakistan support would only be "Administrative" and considering the pressure It was no issue if Pakistan would have to give air corridor & technical assistance -9/23
but Pakistan became a party to the war, provided bases to the US especially Shamsi & Jacoabad. Pakistan just had to only cordon off the borders but launch operation Mizan in 2002.
5) Security cooperation
Musharraf not only provided Military bases but allowed the CIA & US to -10
have boots on the ground in Pakistan. CIA & ISI were carrying out Joint Raids on Pakistani soil based on US Intel, not on Pakistani intelligence input. CIA & later Blackwater was running separate parallel operations.
No sovereign country allow foreign troops such raids -11/23
6) Distinguishion b/w Taliban & Al-Qaeda
Yes, he pitched the idea that there should be limited tactical operations but when the US refused to agree he went along with the plans. He fully went after the Afghan Taliban just like Al-Qaeda. -12/23
- Haqqania was raided by Pakistan security forces on 24 April 2002, again was raided on 26 April 2002. Operation Mizan was launched in 2002.
Former Defense Minister of IEA Mullah Obaidullah also Number third of IEA Died in a Pakistani prison was captured in 2007 -13
Ustad Yasir head of Taliban cultural affairs & a former spokesman for Taliban leader Mullah Omar was handed over to the US by Pakistan security agencies along with Ambassador to Pakistan Abdul Salam Zaef and around 500 Afghan Taliban leaders. So this whole conspiracy of -14/23
Musharraf airlifting Taliban & not doing anything wrong is such a bogus lie propagated by Western Media outlets, which is carried out by these Musharraf fans to fool the masses just like Musharraf fooled them -15/23
7) Drones strikes
The first drone strike was carried out on 18 June 2004, killing Neik Mohammad despite the fact that he even agreed to expel all Al-Qaeda fighters from the area. This started new series US drone strikes that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent -16/23
Pakistanis which resulted in a backlash against Pak not against the US because Pakistan was claiming these attacks for damage control. How it pushed Pakistan into war should be understood if you do a comparative analysis of rise in drones with rise in Suicide attacks -17/23
One of such was a Drone strike in the Damadola airstrike resulting in the death of 82 people majority of children. This war was so pathetic that Pakistan was forced to accept Killing own civilian when it was being done by the US. So much of a double game by Musharraf? -18/23
- officials were denied access to their own Jacoabad airbase in their own country, while the US was carrying out drone strikes from Pakistani soil to kill Pakistan while also forcing Pakistan to own the attacks. From the start, it was US who was playing a double game -19/23
Lastly, Musharraf holds a unique record in the world that is topping friendly regime just to replace with the hostile regime. US & Indian Puppet Karzai was launched from Islamabad with all the finances from Pakistan. Infact CIA station chief in Islamabad Robert L Grenier -20/23
write that how General Jaffer of ISI kept asking for the payment of arms & finances to Karzai. This was the state of affairs it is sad to see people rewriting history. But "We are all products and, if we are not careful, victims of our experience"... -21/23
It is just a gentle reminder it was the US's war for which Musharraf rented out Pakistan. Lesson from this bloody War
- Absolutely not to foreign wars
- Absolutely not to Dictatorship
I deliberately avoided many details Anyone who wants to see my patriotism certificate can -22
meet me in person. -23/23
