#Thread on Everything you want know about Kanyadaan
First of all, kanyadaan is not a vedic ritual, but Hinduism is not a religion which can be driven only by Vedas, Hinduism is also driven by culture. So, kanydaan is a cultural ritual.
2ndly, even if it is a cultural ritual, it don’t do any unethical things, it do not limit any women right like H@lala and is being followed since the mahabharta time.
Why kanyadaan?
kanyadan is a ritual through which a parent gives up their parental responsibilities towards the girl so that the groom and his family can truly accept her as their own child, which is very much logical.
some are saying that a mantra is chanted at the time of kanyadaan, which is not right. Actually, that mantra is for another and vedic ritual called Panigraham, in which the groom takes the bride's hand in his own, it signifies the agreement of both of them to the union.
Is kanyadan a mahadaan?
कन्यादानं महादानं सर्वदानेषु दुर्लभ, तदैव योगेन त्वं गृहाण वरोत्तमं ।
It is said that this is a way in which a daughter helps her parents to free them from the karm bandhan and to remove all the sins not only of this birth but also of past lives.
Another reason can be because of its mention in shiva puraan. According to shiv puraan, Dwij avatar chapter, it is said that through kanyadaan one can attain Mokshā.
What is the controversial part?
The word daan is being interpreted wrongly and being claim that girl is not a object, that one can be given as daan. Well, If we look it with a wide mindset, “daan” plays an important role in everyone’s life.
Someone has given us their vidya as daan to make us educated. Someone has given us their hard earned money as daan, to help us grow. So, the things which we daan are very precocious. Off course someone has given their own daughter to make our life meaningful and beautiful.
Why kanyadan is being treated as taboo?
From last few years, people with their agendas have tried to find something bad in our every ritual. For example vijay tendulkar had written a play kanyadan in 1983, where he is completely behaved like a racist and sexist.
In 2018 a movie has been made on this. These thing influence younger generation badly.
Its shameful that our society has rituals which actually have compromised the rights of women, like h@lala, triple tallak, baal vivah, 4 marriages. But nobody dares to make an ad on these.
