I started writing about investing and finance 1 year ago.
Here are the best tools and resources I discovered that you can start using right away to supercharge your investing 🧵👇
1/ Let's start with the tools.
@YahooFinance is my go to for data.
I use the yfinance library to get price data of stock tickers - Open, Close, High, Volume, etc. (for free)
pypi.org
Was indispensable for most of my research!
2/ yfinance is great but it doesn't have everything.
To get stock ticker data beyond that, I used Alpha Vantage.
alphavantage.co
It has 60+ indicators that yfinance doesn't (but it's paid)
3/ For up-to-date info about the top gainers, top losers, PE ratios, volumes, etc. - @FINVIZ_com is a great screener.
It lets you compare stocks, get a visual overview and stay on top of the market.
finviz.com
4/ To manage your data - @RowsHQ.
Rows is the new Excel - and so much more.
It lets you automate your data collection with a number of great integrations -
They have an amazing integration with alphavantage that lets you pull stock data with no code!
rows.com
5/ To backtest strategies and see how they would have performed - @ComposerTrade
Composer lets you play with existing strategies and combine them to create your own.
Imagine creating your own custom backtest from scratch without a single line of code!
composer.trade
6/ To collect cryptocurrency data on 12k+ coins for free - @coingecko.
I used this for my post that analyzed historical data to find a reliable crypto strategy.
(Looks like they also have a paid plan now for higher performance)
coingecko.com
7/ For data on how Congress trades - Senators and Representatives - @capitol2iq.
capitoltrades.com
It also provides a number of filters and charts to visualize the data in a number of ways.
8/ For historical data on IPOs in the stock market for almost all stocks listed after 2000: iposcoop.com.
I leveraged their data for multiple analyses. Great tool!
9/ To track the purchases by insiders in companies: openinsider.com
It lists the purchases with time, price, quantity, etc. Very helpful to track if there are any massive stock moves by insiders.
10/ To track the top brands in the world, so that you can invest in them - @RepTrak.
reptrak.com
I leveraged this for my analysis on how the top 100 brands perform.
11/ To screen all the trades made by @jimcramer - madmoney.thestreet.com.
I know, I know 😅 - It's up to you how you use it (cough cough @CramerTracker).
Check out my analysis on the last 5 years of his trades to figure out what you should do.
12/ Now on to the resources!
To understand the importance of data in making investment decisions - @dollarsanddata.
Nick writes in a fun and engaging way on everything from Mutual Funds to Crypto to Risk without compromising on the data.
ofdollarsanddata.com
13/ For the best breakdowns of investing concepts into threads: @10kdiver.
From volatility to retained earnings to Kelly criterion to Charlie Munger, there's nothing he hasn't covered!
14/ For a deep-dive into Geometric returns and a totally different way of looking at long-term returns: @breakingthemark
Check out his articles on his blog:
breakingthemarket.com
15/ For an investing checklist on how to value companies with step-by-step examples: @BrianFeroldi
Check out his playlist here:
youtube.com
16/ For live updates and high value signal on the crypto world: @ecoinometrics.
It's one of the few Crypto sources that I can vouch for!
17/ For a contrarian viewpoint that has you grounded (and just some great writing in general): @DoombergT.
The green chicken is taking Twitter by storm, and if you haven't followed already, you should!
18/ Volatility and risk are very important topics for every investor. @KrisAbdelmessih does a great job writing about these in his blog "Moontower Meta".
His Money Wiki is a great resource for all beginners (and even pros)!
notion.moontowermeta.com
19/ While there are a lot of accounts that talk about money, @Jack_Raines is a great account to follow to put it all in context.
His pieces talk about optimizing for happiness instead of money, and his Twitter account is great fun!
@Jack_Raines And finally, (self-plug :p), follow @mkt_sentiment for interesting threads 2-3x a week.
