Germany, Hungary and Italy are not too keen to cut Russia out from the international SWIFT payment network.
This might lead you to believe that: we as humans have an innate ability to be super selfish.
And, you are right.
[A thread...]
[1] Loss Aversion theory:
- We get more pleasure by NOT losing $100 than winning $100.
- Thinking for ourself helps us minimise losses in the short-term.
Creating win-wins seems great, but we are intrinsically wired to avert losses first.
In Ukraine-Russia's context:
[2] Pain and pleasure theory:
- At its base, humans act: to avoid pain or to get pleasure.
- Contrary to popular belief, they don't act to "help others".
- Unless, it indirectly aligns with the pleasure and pain theory.
It is hard to imagine other people's pain.
[3] Vantage point theory:
People/Countries do not see eye-to-eye because they come from different circumstances.
Example: It is very tough for an intelligent student to truly understand why an average student can't even get 75% marks.
This lack of empathy curtails actions.
[4] We love the status-quo as humans:
We don't like to go out of our comfort zone or stick our neck out for others.
[5] The fallacy of numbers:
There is a reason why non-profits use the following strategy:
Option 1: Save 100 kids from Hunger
Option 2: Save X, a small girl, who ......
You will donate to option 2.
When countries fight, the focus becomes numbers, not individual stories.
[6] We imagine a perfect world:
- As a result of US invading Iraq, millions of Iraqis were impacted.
The world simply watched the show.
- Countries will now quote such instances to justify their inactions.
This further creates bigotry. And, incentives not to act.
