I can share anecdotally that almost all my friends were out in the street summer '20 - dressed in black, advocating for the cause.
My instagram was filled with calls to defund the police.
This morning I dug into the FBI 2020 crime stats.

I have tried to bring up these statistics a few times and received what I can only refer to as "death stares" (no pun intended).
What Eric Adams said resonates deeply with me.
"I thought Black lives mattered. Where are all those who stated Black lives matter?"

Black murder victims are up 43% over the past 10 year average.
Everybody I know (who has seen these stats) is blaming the pandemic.
Perhaps that is true.
But I don't think it's the primary driver. I think the defund movement is more likely the cause.

I think that the defund movement sent police the message that they aren't appreciated or necessary.
In vilifying them we hurt their ability to recruit, engage & retain the best of the best.
The police have been shushed and disempowered. And now we are looking at the wreckage.

I lost faith in the media summer 2020. It was a turning point - and I don't think I will ever go back.
These days I look at the data - not the headlines.
Here is the data:
FBI crime data explorer: crime-data-explorer.fr.cloud.gov
Police shootings database: washingtonpost.com

P.S. The US government put a man on the moon 53 years ago and this is the main FBI crime website.
They haven't updated it with 2020 or 2021 data.
Shame on them. They are either completely incompetent or trying to hide something.

And - it is unconscionable that you need a WaPo subscription to see the police shootings data.
The data should be free & easy to access. Otherwise we rely on our polarized click-bait media to tell us what's going on.
Perhaps that is what the FBI wants...?
