The study consisted of 352 participants that were asked to read several short passages of text of about 300–500 words.
The texts were shown in 16 different fonts.
They tested 3 things:
• Which font did they prefer?
• Reading speed (Words Per Minute)
• Comprehension

Among high-legibility fonts, there was a 35% difference in reading speeds between the best and the worst, so it matters to get the font right.
Unfortunately, there is no single font that all participants read consistently faster with:

Garamond had the highest average reading speed at 312 WPM (Words Per Minute)
Open Sans had the lowest average reading speed at 254 WPM.
But Garamond wasn't the best for all users. 😅
Many users were faster readers with another font, but unfortunately, it varied.

But what if we ask users to choose their font?
Sorry, we're out of luck. 😅
People do not know what is good for them regarding font choice for reading.

There are however age-related differences in what fonts are best:
EB Garamond and Montserrat tend to increase the reading speeds of readers older than 35 years, on average.
Sadly this is not the best choice for the general population.

The study, ultimately, doesn't answer which font is the best to use for most people.
But the most interesting data point is which font they decided to set their study in:
Merriweather
