All the grad students I met who thought they were too smart for academia left and became more successful than they would've been otherwise. All the ones who [correctly] perceived themselves as 'imposters' stuck around-- think about what this has done to academia
I'm sure this measure is suspect, but it checks out to me. Why would you feel like you should be a professor if you struggle to read one hundred pages a week or can't do eighth grade math? Nigga of course you feel like an 'imposter'
Already this phrase imposter syndrome was common when I was in grad school and curiously it was always followed by the argument that 'having to pass my qualifying exams is racist and/or sexist somehow'. Hmm, yes, I can't stand to be tested on things I'm definitely competent to do
Qualifying exam was possibly my favorite part of grad school-- wow, 24 straight hours demonstrate not only mastery but also the undisputed truth that I'm the smartest person here. C'mon, are you even trying? I recommended the department do them annually to cull the weak
