🧵on how to straighten the end of a central line wire:
why it's a good idea to be able to do this, how to do it, and a question at the end.
Very often, when placing a central line or other line, the little blue guide piece will become misplaced.
You are now stuck with having to get the curved end into the needle.
The other end of the wire is straight, but it's stiffer, and more dangerous to use.
Luckily, the wire will STRAIGHTEN whenever it is STRETCHED,
But you have to do it one-handed, and that's challenging.
The key is to realize you can pinch the wire at two different points: thumb/index finger and fingers 4-5 against your palm (see the arrows).
With practice, you will learn how to contort your hand so as to stretch the wire, which straightens it as you see in the video.
You can now insert the wire into the needle without the guide.
This is hard at first, but after a while, you will be able to do it.
I wanted to end with a diagram showing what structural feature of the wire causes it to behave in this way, but I was not able to find this. If anyone knows the answer, please reply here...
