The violent history of 1 July 1960 📜 A little known fact about the day the Trust Territory of Somalia received independence was that there were huge demonstrations in Mogadishu AGAINST Somalia's independence. Protestors were shot and killed by Somalian police.
One person was killed and thirty two people, including eleven police officers were injured in the violent clashes.
The demonstrators mostly belonged to the Greater Somali League who by clan was composed of members of the Darod clan who feared being dominated post independence by the Hawiye clan.
Another shocking fact about the 1 July 1960 celebrations was that one million dollars was spent on "independence day celebrations", an ungodly amount for an impoverished state. To give you an idea, adjusted to inflation, this figure comes to $10 million dollars today.
