Twitter has 200 million daily users.
But 98% don’t know how to write good tweets.
I’ve published 6587 tweets and written for 7 figure ghostwriting agencies.
If you want to learn how to write like a professional, read this :
The best tweets on your timeline are from a handful of creators.
But this isn’t just a stroke of luck.
There’s a science behind writing good tweets.
Today I’m going to simplify the science for you so you can join the top writers on this platform.
Before we get started
Head over to the first tweet and share it with your audience.
This thread will transform your Twitter experience if you apply what I’m about to share.
Done?
Now let’s get started.
1. Go from 0-1000
You must first understand the basics if you’ve just got started on Twitter.
No matter how good your tweets are, your reach will be minimal until you reach your first 1000 followers.
Here’s how you can get past the 1k mark :
The first step is to optimize your profile.
Then pick three topics you enjoy writing about and start tweeting daily.
Your goal is to produce 50 pieces of content and then iterate.
If you want to build a powerful personal brand then read this :
Create a Twitter list of creators you admire.
Sort your lists on the individual topics or audience sizes.
It’s your choice.
The aim is not just to paraphrase their content.
The aim is to add value to their tweets, comment with your experience and gain leverage.
2. Quantity to Quality
As you get closer to the 1000 mark, switch your focus from quantity to quality.
Share your wins.
Share your losses.
Be real.
Be different.
Add something extra to your tweets that people can remember you by and separate your content from the rest.
Start analysing your tweets by :
• Profile clicks
• Impressions
• Retweets
I’d strongly recommend using extensions like Blackmagic to break down the essence of your best tweets.
You can also use Twitter analytics.
Always remember :
Audience first.
Fundamentals are crucial on Twitter.
If you can prove that you are a valuable individual, then people will follow you.
And the only way you prove that you’re a valuable individual is by providing valuable content.
More on this later.
Now, remember that there will be low points.
Not every tweet will perform as you might expect it to.
And if you’re expecting excellent results on your content immediately, you’re mistaken.
Play the long-term game for long-term results.
3. The Swipe File
It’s time to dive into some advanced strategies.
The first one is simple.
To write good tweets, you must read good tweets.
And to do that, you must build a swipe file.
A swipe file is a collection of tweets that make you say :
“Damn, I wish I wrote that!”
The best place to build your swipe file is Notion.
Sort them according to your niche topics and add tweets as you discover them.
Build this collection and use it to spark up your ideas.
4. The Trifecta
Your goal on Twitter should be to become an asset, not a commodity.
To do that, you need to understand the trifecta :
• Growth tweets
• Authority tweets
• Authenticity tweets
Let’s check out each one.
‣ Growth Tweets
These are tweets where you turn your personal experience into relatable insight.
This should be the dominant pillar of your content strategy.
How-to guides and simple tips work perfectly.
For example :
‣ Authenticity Tweets
These are the tweets that show people you’re human.
Document your story and tell your audience what you’re working on.
This is how you display your personality and build valuable friendships.
For example :
‣ Authority Tweets
These are the tweets where you display your expertise.
Focus on your audience’s pain points and share step-by-step methods to solve them.
This is how you share value and help your audience overcome obstacles.
For example :
5. The Checklist
Before you publish a tweet, it should run through a small set of tests.
This isn’t mandatory, but it helps ensure your content is on point.
Let’s inspect this.
‣ So What Test
Before publishing a tweet, ask yourself :
“So what?”
This adds a filter to your content.
It’s okay to post platitudes occasionally.
It's how most people gain their followers.
But if you want to build an engaged audience, avoid them as much as possible.
‣ Attention Capture
The next question to ask :
“Does this tweet capture attention?”
This is a simple yet effective way to gauge if a tweet will do well.
Tweets that get noticed are controversial, polarising and well structured.
‣ Powerful Language
The last question you should ask :
“Does the tweet convey powerful language?”
You must direct your tweets towards the reader and their specific problems.
Use active voice and words like ‘you’ to make your tweets stand out.
6. Good vs Great Tweets
With the strategies above, you’ve now got an idea of how to write good tweets.
But let’s take it one step further.
I’m going to share three tips to ensure your content goes from good to great.
Let's dive in.
‣ Formatting
Most times, formatting is the difference between tweets that go viral and tweets that go unnoticed.
If your tweets are easy to read and well structured, they will perform well.
Example :
‣ Less is more
The best tweets can convey the same idea in 100 characters, whereas most tweets need 280.
Use pictures and visuals to demonstrate the same idea in a shortened time span.
For example :
‣ Reader’s psychology
The best writers on Twitter are undercover psychologists.
They know how to persuade the reader, trigger emotions and make them take action.
Learn these and apply them to your tweets :
• Metaphors
• Confirmation Bias
• Barnum Effect
• Humor Effect
