I am part of a free Academic CV review project and I feel bad going through the CV of some prospective applicants.
Common CV mistakes noticed includes:
πŸ“ Date of Birth and Gender Information.
πŸ“Professional Summary that does not tally with their research interest in any way
πŸ“ Putting their undergraduate project defense and seminar presentation under the Conferences and Presentations section.
πŸ“Adding their term papers and undergraduate projects as Publications.
πŸ“Adding a list of online courses and certifications that do not relate to their program
πŸ“Adding their marital statusπŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
πŸ“ Adding a long residential address that carries up to 2 lines in their CV. πŸ˜”
πŸ“Adding a long list of funny skills and competencies like ability to work under pressure, ability to read and write well. 😳
πŸ“Adding their secondary school and primary school education.
πŸ“Adding a long list of religious activities and duties under leadership and volunteering experiences.
πŸ“Having a poor formatted CV due to the use of different font and style in one CV
At the end of the day, irrelevant information conceals the important information needed by the admission committee.
It is better to have a 1-paged CV that contains relevant information targetted at your prospective program than to have 6 paged CV with a lot of irrelevant stuffs
Remember, your document is not the only one to be reviewed by the admission committee.
Make their job easier by presenting a CV targeted to the program you are applying for.
Remove any experience, certification or online courses that is not relevant.
Make their job easier. πŸ™Œ
