{ motion design } Some insights from a studio looking to hire across 2D, 3D, and design roles:
● 10X as many applicants for the Designer role over the 3D position.
● The majority of 2D Animator reels were either text animation, hand-over-smartphone pointing, or SoM tutorials.

● Lots of 3D reels were emulating MvM and/or Tendril style work – but not to the same level of polish.
● Surprisingly VERY few examples of well-animated, clean, 3D broadcast type/motion work.
● Not surprisingly, most character work in the Corporate Memphis style.

● Still so many reels that open with '22 Demo Reel but no indication of the kind of role you're looking for.
● Most music on reels still mildly annoying at best 😂
● A handful of really nice "narrative" reels that told me as much about the person as the tools they used 🙏

● More "Art Director" reels than I was comfortable viewing that had very suspect design skills – ESP WHEN TALKING ABOUT TYPE SKILLS 🤮
● Did I mention how many reels were full of School of Motion work?
● @Sekani__Solomon REALLY set the template w his demo reel opening titles

After being away from the hiring game for a few years (and making a CLASS on demo reels), not much seems to have changed:
● SO MANY people make it REALLY hard to find their work when applying.
● The reels that stand out seem to stand out EVEN MORE NOW than they did before.

When I made the LEVEL UP! course over @SchoolOfMotion – one of the three superpowers I highlighted that motion designers could wield that wasn't Houdini or Unreal was...
WRITING.
And holy smokes!
The applicants who know how to write with brevity & curiosity REALLY stand out.

@SchoolOfMotion If you know me, you know I've looked at a LOT of reels over the years, and I've coached a decent amount of people on how to get a Studio or CD's attention.
3 simple factors:
● Short
● Memorable
● Easy to identify what you want to do
● Bonus points if you make me laugh 🤣

TL;DR?
● There are TONS of jobs for 3D artists that can do the work that's readily available, not just the fun stuff we see in tutorials and NFTs.
● There's a LOT of competition amongst designers that don't animate.
● Rock solid keyframing skills are STILL in short supply.
