If you’re a SaaS marketer, you need to study Gusto.
The SEO & growth strategies they used become a $9.5B startup and reach 200k customers is so impressive.
Here's a few things you can learn from them 🧵
First, a glimpse into @GustoHQ's SEO moat:
2.3M Backlinks
10M annual organic visits
$13M worth of organic traffic
Ranks for 191,000+ keywords
Impressive right?
You would have to pay Google $13M to capture the amount of traffic they get from SEO..
This is why SEO isn't dead.
I’ve seen an a lot of talk about how blogging is dead + newsletters are the new chief in town.
I get the sentiment.
There’s a ton of buzz around newsletters but blogging still has a key role to play. It's the Gusto blog that has played the biggest role in their SEO moat.
Gusto has implemented an SEO driven blog strategy to perfection.
It’s estimated that their blog generates about 1.09M visits annually (and that’s on the rise).
Going after phrases like:
What is a Pay Stub?
How to fill out a W4?
What’s Imputed Income?
And often ranking # 1.
Government created content is consistently a low hanging fruit for SEOs to unlock traffic.
Gov't should be developing pieces that educate their citizens but red tape and a lack of personality often slows them down from creating valuable content.
Gusto has capitalized on this.
Google just announced the "Helpful Content" Update.
Gusto is an example of how to do this right:
1) Great user experience
2) Stay focused on a key niche
3) Create content with authority
4) Demonstrate knowledge & expertise
5) Deliver content that aligns with search intent
But it doesn't just end with blog posts that define things like pay stubs or the policies around unemployment.
Gusto also creates editorial content by investing in guest contributors who have real world experience.
This gives them expertise, authority & trust.
All key to SEO.
One final type of content that Gusto invests in that has paid significant dividends in their organic traffic is the development of tools that help their audience.
Tools like 'Pay Stub Generators' and 'Salary Calculators' are backlink and traffic gold. Localized it's pure $$$:
One of the other pieces that they embrace in their blog is understanding and rooting their content in search intent.
If you're not familiar with how to create a strategy rooted in search intent...
