Big food has some of the best marketers in the world.
They’ve convinced you that junk foods are healthy.
Here are 14 of the worst fake “health foods”:
1. Cheerios
Marketed as good for your heart, cheerios have been considered the healthy choice of cereal. While better than many of their counterparts, cheerios are still highly processed food. Their cholesterol lowering effects are greatly overstated.
2. Sports Drinks
Gotta get your electrolytes, but Gatorade and the like are not the way to do it. They are full of sugar or artificial sweeteners and food coloring. Best is to drink water when exercising, if you’re feeling low on electrolytes add a bit of sea salt.
3. Veggie Chips
Chips made from veggies must be healthy right? They have just enough vegetable in them to be called that. They are made of corn and oil. Grab a carrot or stick of celery instead.
4. Muffins
Not much better than a donut, but many people think muffins are the healthy choice. Pre-packaged muffins are made from refined flour and seed oils along with a lot of sugar. There are healthy muffin recipes out there if you make them yourself.
5. Trail Mix
There are healthy versions but often these mixes are very high in sugar. The nuts are roasted in seed oils and are mostly peanuts. The dried fruit in them is also covered in sugar. If you want a mix like this, make it at home with high-quality ingredients.
6. Fruit Smoothies
Made at home fruit smoothies can be fairly healthy, but the ones you buy at the store or smoothie aren’t. Typically they will have over 50g of sugar per serving and no fiber. One bottle may contain two servings. If you want fruit just eat it.
7. Fat-free Cookies/Snacks
“They’re fat-free so we can eat twice as much”. Packaged cookies of any kind are unhealthy, especially those labeled as fat-free. They remove the fat and replace it with sugar. Just avoid these types of foods altogether.
8. Applesauce
Apples are already sweet, yet applesauce often will contain high amounts of added sugar, often in the form of corn syrup. If you feel like you need applesauce make your own without the sugar. Better yet, just eat the apple.
9. Energy Bars
Highly processed, often full of sugar energy bars are not a good quick snack. When you eat one of these you are eating corn syrup, rice syrup, sugar, and refined flours.
10. Instant Oatmeal
First ingredient is oats and the second is sugar. Oats can be a good breakfast, but the instant kind is a different story. Often the “fruit” in them are flavored pieces. Make the oatmeal yourself for a much healthier option.
11. Fruit Snacks
Some do contain actual fruit juice and no added sugar. Still shouldn’t eat them or give them to your kids. They are still candy.
12. Fruit Juice
You’ve probably heard me say fruit juice is soda disguise. Just like smoothies, juices are very high in sugar with none of the fiber and few of the vitamins and other beneficial things in fruit. Just don’t drink it.
13. Weight Loss Shakes
You may lose weight using these as meal replacements, but most of them are full of gums, synthetic vitamins, and artificial sweeteners. There are healthy protein shake options, but most of the premade ones should just be avoided.
14. Protein Bars
A quick way to get some protein but often high in sugar as well. If not sugar then it's artificial sweeteners. There are some better versions out there, but best to get your protein in its natural form.
