How to destroy a bad habit in 35 days or less
I used the techniques below to destroy my weed, video game, and junk food addiction
THREAD:
The hardest to destroy was my weed addiction, been doing it for the past 10 years, but today I am 133 days sober from that garbage
& here's exactly how I destroyed the habit
1 - Find your triggers
Become self aware of the activities that trigger your bad habit(this is called the cue)
Every single one of your bad habits has a trigger, I learned this from the power of habit by Charles Duhigg, highly recommend you read it if you're serious about this.
Example:
My triggers for smoking weed were:
- Being in my room for too long
- Before going to sleep
- When I felt uncreative
- When I felt frustrated
- After the gym
- My days off
- After work
2 - Change your thought patterns
You usually talk yourself into taking on your bad habit, you reason with yourself until you give in
You think "one time won't hurt" or "I'll feel better afterwards"
When this isn't the case at all, and you know it.
Again, practice self awareness.
Take a step back and look at the way you're talking to yourself. Catch yourself whenever your mind tries convincing you to take on the bad habit.
Argue with yourself, tell yourself "Remember how you felt last time?" and break the pattern.
The mind is a very good salesman, it will persuade you to make wrong decisions, it craves those cheap dopamine hits
Especially when a bad habit is ingrained inside of you.
3 - Find your 'Why'
Doing this will make it easier to fight off the voice in your head
Sit down, think about why you want to stop, and write it down
Ask yourself: How will your life improve? Visualize this, be specific, and feel it inside of you.
Will you be stronger? sharper? More focused? More efficient? In control?
Are you doing it for your family? Your kids? To make more money?
Whatever it is, ground yourself on your purpose everyday.
4 - Gradually bring it down
Stopping right away is hard
There's so many time that I instantly quit smoking for 3 days, then I fell back into my addiction even harder
The best thing you can do to break a habit, is decline your addiction in such tiny amounts that your brain won't notice
If it's coffee, decline your intake by half a cup every 3-4 days
If it's video games, decline your time on them by 10 minutes every 3-4 days.
5 - Journal to understand how you work
Brain dump all your thoughts in a notebook
This will help you understand who you are, your thought patterns, and build a deeper connection with yourself.
A simple 15 minute journaling session will help you understand your
- Triggers
- Psychology
- Weaknesses
- Way of thinking
- Hidden traumas
- And your strengths
All key to taking full control of your life.
6 - Make a chart
Buy a huge whiteboard and put it in the middle of your room
In it write your purpose, goals, values, and the person you want to become
Below that make a box chart for everyday of the week, and everyday you don't take on your habit, put a huge red X in the box.
Seeing the chart get filled up with Xs will motivate you to keep going and it will hold you accountable
Here's the chart I made when breaking my weed addiction.
7 - Get someone to hold you accountable
Open up about your addiction, and own up to the situation
Tell a close and trusted friend what's happening and that you want to be better
This will give you a huge sense of motivation, having someone to help you will make things easier.
Or you could find someone who's in the same situation as you and hold each other accountable
If you want me to help you break a bad habit, and hold you accountable
Feel free to DM me, i'm always down to help.
8 - Stop identifying with the habit
Change the story you tell yourself in your head
Make sure your thoughts, feelings, and choices all align with who you want to become
Example for smoking
Instead of saying "i'm trying to stop"
Start saying "i am not a smoker"
9 - Be careful with your surroundings
Stop hanging out with people who take on that bad habit
This will be hard because you'll have to cut off close friends and family
But remember that you're doing this for yourself, and if they care for you then they will understand.
10 - Replace the bad habit
Keep yourself distracted with healthy habits
Keep yourself so busy that you don't have a chance to think about your bad habit
When you feel the urge to take on the habit do something else, meditate, cook, journal, go walk, read, or hit the gym.
TL;DR
1. Find your triggers
2. Change your thought patterns
3. Find your 'Why?'
4. Gradually bring it down
5. Journal to understand how you work
6. Make a chart
7. Ask friends to hold you accountable
8. Stop identifying with the habit
9. Change your surroundings
10. Replace the habit
