France’s off-ball shape is WEIRD. I haven’t figured it out yet. Griezmann & Dembélé are virtually on top of each other, Mbappé is in a front 2 with Giroud, & Tchouaméni/Rabiot are in the pivot.
It’s really lopsided, disjointed & quite frankly strange.
4-3-3 on the ball though.
Seems to be a 4-3-1-2 with Griezmann man-marking Mooy in the #6 with Dembélé coming back to defend alongside Tchouaméni and Rabiot in a midfield 3, but I’m unsure it makes much sense for Dembélé to come that far back. It’s something that can definitely be exploited in transition.
Deschamps’ thinking is likely that France should be okay in defensive transition because the fullbacks are defensively minded, Rabiot is often deep alongside Tchouaméni anyway due to his profile, and Griezmann works extremely hard defensively. That gives Dembélé time to recover.
Mbappé is starting to track back a little now though so maybe it’s meant to be a standard 4-4-1-1 with Mbappé tracking back to the left because he didn’t in the first 10 minutes but he has since Australia went 1-0 up.. either way, it’s all slightly incoherent off the ball.
