I have given 2 prelims. In my first prelims(2021) i failed miserably and got only 74 marks in gs 1 and 44 marks in csat. Cut off that year was around 88. I was approximately 15 marks below the cut-off.
In my second prelims in 2022, I was able to qualify prelims with a huge margin although the paper was more difficult. I was getting around 120 according to various coaching institute answer keys. So what did I change in this year's prelims strategy?
Here's a thread:-
- First of all a huge thanks to @AnupamSharmaIFS sir and his posts related to prelims which helped me in developing the art of elimination.
- prelims is not just about knowledge, it is a lot more about your mindset and confidence.
In my first prelims, I was very scared and hence made many mistakes, didn't attempt many questions, and was hesitant to take risks.
However, in my second attempt, I was very confident and thus small unnecessary mistakes were avoided.
Also when you are confident you are able to take risks and give your best. This really works for prelims. However, this doesn't mean blind guessing. It means doing intelligent guesswork.
- Intelligent guesswork can be developed through practicing PYQs and mock tests.
- In my 2nd attempt, I gave lots of mocks in order to gain confidence.
- solving and analyzing PYQs are very important as they repeat in some form or another.
- revising the basic books multiple times is very important as they are the ones that will help you sail through prelims.
- people ignore the basic books at the cost of current affairs.
- going to exam with an open mindset and using common sense while solving the questions.
- Trying to maximize the attempts as this give you enough buffer to make up for wrong guesses. In my 2022 attempt, i attempted around 89 questions.
- questions that are very factual and if one is not 100% sure, then they should not be guessed as there is a high probability of getting those questions wrong.
For example, this question was very factual and I did not know its answer, so I left it.
some examples:-
in this question, 3rd statement has very fewer chances of being correct as the installation of Somnath temple being done by the president does make much sense. So this statement can be eliminated.
1st statement is correct and very obvious.
2nd statement is a lesser-known fact but it may be true and has a higher probability of being true as compared to statement 3
thus you can arrive at the answer
That's it for now!!
I hope it adds value to your preparation.
First statement is very extreme as there are many examples of natural nanoparticles.
Second statement was in news and any serious aspirant would know about it.
3rd statement is very generic and those who study nanoparticles also study nano toxicity.
Thus you can arrive at answer
