Traitors of India The thread would list few of the greatest traitors of India, whose acts allowed foreign rule of the country, for which they were rewarded by the invaders. 🧵
1. Sanggaios or Sanjaya (c. 327 BCE) Sanggaios was a chieftain under 'Astes' or 'Hastin' during Alexander's invasion. He betrayed his master and joined the Greeks, who captured the city. Sanggaios was later given administration of the fallen city by Alexander.
2. Sisicottus or Sasigupta (c. 326 BCE) Sasigupta was a chieftain of NW of India & helped Alexander during his invasion. He was an agent of Greek imperialism, who also helped Alexander crush rebellion of Ashvanayas. He was rewarded with regions like Rock of Aronos to govern.
3. Aambhi ( c. 326 BCE) Aambhi was the king of Taxila during Alexander's invasion, & was called 'Taxiles' or 'Omphis' by Greek writers. He helped Alexander by opening his city gates, providing men & material for his campaigns. He was rewarded with lands & gifts by Alexander.
4. Mir Zafar (1691-1765) Mir Zafar betrayed Siraj Ud Daulah at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. He was rewarded with the position of 'Nawab of Bengal' by the British. His palace is still called 'Namak Haram Deorhi' Or Traitor Gate'.
5. Daulat Khan Lodhi & Ala-ud-Din (1526 AD) Daulat Khan was the Governor of Punjab during the time of Ibrahim Lodhi, & Al-Ud-Din was the uncle of Ibrahim Lodhi. Both these invited Babur to invade India, which led to formation of Mughal empire. These two were suitably rewarded.
6. Nazib Khan (died 1770 AD) Najib Khan Rohilla invited Abdali to invade India & helped with money and men. He was the reason for the destruction of Maratha forces at Panipat in 1761, although he was a great friend of Malharao Holkar. Was rewarded with title 'Mir Bakshi'.
7. Raghunath Rao (1734-1783) He was the son of Bajirao-I & led the Maratha conquest up to Indus in 1758-1759. Later, however, he was involved in assassinating Peshwa Narayan Rao & ran away to British & signed the treaty of Surat.
8. Lal Singh & Tej Singh (c. 1845 AD). Both these were generals of the Sikh empire and while their troops were on the verge of victory, they left their troops. Battle of Ferozeshah & Sobraon are examples of their treachery. Both were suitably rewarded by the British.
9. Sobha Singh and Shadi Lal (1930's) Sobha Singh was the father of celebrated author Khushwant Singh. Both these gave evidence against Bhagat Singh during Lahore Conspiracy case. Sobha Singh was given the title of 'Sir', while Shadi Lal was given lands at Baghpat.
10. Unamed Guards Last but not the least, to all those unknown guards of the city or fort gates, who opened the gates to the invaders. They did this because of promise of money and position. End
