You don't have to stuff your face with unhealthy slop just because it's the holidays
Here are 4 recipes to transform your annual food bender into a healthy, nutrient-dense feast:
1. Apple Pie
STOP FEARING DESSERT
Sugar is fine, as long as you consume it in reasonable quantities
Which means you don't have to deprive yourself of Apple Pie this holiday season
Here's how to make it the right way:
You'll need:
- Organic bread flour (google "beadtopia")
- Pasture-raised lard or butter for the crust
- Organic apples, maple syrup, and organic spices for the filling
Then? Just follow your favorite recipe, subbing in your natural ingredients.
Easy as, literally, pie
2. Eggnog
Liquid junk food, or nutrient-dense superfood?
YOU DECIDE.
Because it completely depends on the ingredients you use.
If you look at the ingredients in store-bought eggnog, it reads like a chemistry experiment.
Not the case if you use these:
You'll need:
- Raw, grass-fed, pasture-raised dairy (google "shireapp" to find some near you)
- Maple syrup instead of sugar (see a trend?)
- Organic spices
- Pasture-raised eggs
Then, you guessed it, follow your favorite recipe.
Sub in your healthy ingredients for their 🗑️
3. Fried seafood
STOP DEMONIZING FRIED FOODS.
Fried food is healthy if you fry it in real fat.
Fried fish is a staple of Christmas feasts for many of our Mediterranean friends.
And guess what?
It can be a guilt-free, protein-rich, fixture in your holiday diet, too.
Read on:
You'll need:
- Homeade bread crumbs (blend dried organic sourdough instead of regular bread made with plain flour)
- Mix bread crumbs with egg, pecorino romano cheese (and whatever spices you like)
- Use wild-caught fish (never farm-raised)
- Pan fry in ghee or tallow
Voila
4. Cornbread
I know what you're thinking...
"Another bread dish!? Say it ain't so Tan Man!"
Once again, the health-profile lies in the ingredients and the preparation, not the food itself
Typical corn bread uses raw corn (pesticides), and canola oil.
We're changing that...
You'll need:
- Organic masa harina (google it) instead of normal corn meal
- Organic bread flour (throw in some sourdough starter to ferment the bread)
- Honey/maple syrup instead of sugar
- Grass-fed butter, pasture-raised eggs
Enjoy delicious, moist cornbread. Guilt-free.
You can apply the above rules to all your favorite holiday recipes.
Here's a cheat sheet to reference later:
Replace:
- Oils with butter or tallow
- Bread/flour with organic sourdough bread crumbs/organic flour + sourdough
- Regular dairy with raw, grass-fed, and pasture-raised
- Regular eggs with pasture-raised
- Meat/fish with wild-caught/pasture-raised and grass-fed
"Ok Tan Man but isn't this going to be expensive???"
Answer: not really
Yes you'll pay a little bit more for ingredients, but not as much as you think.
And think of all the money you'll save on hospital bills later in life! (not to mention on pepto bismol in the short term)
