I got to visit The Coral Castle the other day, it's a modern-day megalithic structure built in secret at night by one man who claimed he knew the secrets of how the Egyptians built the pyramids. Let's jump into the Mysteries of Coral Castle the Number 21 and #Bitcoin.
Built in the 1930s and 40s in S. Florida by Ed Leedskalnin, and much mystery surrounds its purpose, creation, and message. Many doubt it is possible that such a megalithic structure of solid stone could be built by a single small man. Sounds a little like the Legend of Satoshi...
The popular story told by the tour guides, is that it was built as a monument to a lost love, his sweet 16. The number 16 is encoded throughout the castle. 16 stairs up to the castle, 16 stairs down his spiral well. #Bitcoin is entirely encoded in 16-character hexadecimal.
He spent more than 28 years building Coral Castle, refusing to allow anyone to view him while he worked. He never told anyone who asked him how he made the castle. He would simply answer "It's not difficult if you know how."
The stones are fastened together without mortar. The craftsmanship detail is so fine and the stones are connected with such precision that no light passes through the joints. Even with the passage of decades and massive hurricanes, the stones have not shifted.
Among the features are a 2-story castle, an accurate sundial, a polar telescope, an obelisk, a barbecue, a water well, a fountain, celestial stars & planets, a heart-shaped table, a table in the shape of Florida, 25 rocking chairs, a bathtub, beds, and a throne.
As a craftsman, I really enjoyed seeing his tool shed. He built the coral castle with simple hand tools, & devices of his own design. Many remain a mystery as to how they were used. There are entire YouTube channels devoted to building & investigating his tech.
I feel like that's a good introduction for you to Coral Castle, and there's a TON more stuff you can discover online, but I want to jump into the crazy mathematical stuff now and the Mystery of the Number 21. There's some insane mind-blowing stuff. I'll just touch on a few.
Okay so let's check out his sundial. Absolutely INSANE. It's the world's only megalithic sundial weighing in at about 7 tons. It is also a calendar and shows the current month & all 4 seasons accurately. The base of the sundial is a massive coral rock with a polished concave top.
So why did he put all those figure 8's on the dial? Why not just lines? If you draw lines at the centers of the 8's the shadow will fall accurately on the lines. But why 8's? Why not just draw lines? The answer is mind blowing!!!
If you take a picture of the sun every day at the same location for a whole year, the sun's path is called an analemma. This is due Earth's orbit and axial tilt. The analematic sundial is extremely accurate compared to regular sundials. The analemmas also mark the 4 seasons🤯😮
The analemmatic dial can also tell the month since the sun always follows the same analemmic path. It's easy to see this device and wonder how in the world did he figure this out? Especially daunting is the fact he supposedly ONLY WORKED AT NIGHT! He built a telescope!
The concave part of the sundial is carved from a massive 3 ton coral rock. If he made a single mistake, he would've had to quarry another 3 ton rock by himself and do it all over again. As an artist, I can tell you, this is astonishing! Where did he get this skill & knowledge?
Really quick on the telescope. It's one of the largest rocks in the castle, over 25 feet tall and weighing 23 tons. Imagine a 100-pound man lifting 46,000 pounds by himself! Perfectly oriented at the North Star, it has a "target" in the center he used to make the sundial.
The telescope can be used to calculate the 4 seasons based on which quadrant the North Star appears in. What's even more mind boggling is - If Ed had misplaced the telescope, a 23-ton rock, by even AN INCH, it wouldn't work. The center of the cross marks true North precisely.
There is a LOT of mystery around this device. What it does, the mathematics, the geometry. There are many YouTube channels and websites where people dissect his different devices, but especially this one. This guy even got one to work.

Now I want to jump into what I think is one of the most astounding mysteries of Coral Castle and of course, it surrounds Infinity and the number 21 (👀@knutsvanholm). This mystery was broken wide open by Praveen Monahan in this awesome book - highly recommended. LFG!

Okay so he drew the sun and the moon, where's the mystery? This drawing contains the knowledge Ed gained from making and using the telescope and sundial. This quote from Ed himself says it perfectly. Now remember, when he made these discoveries, we had no GPS, but I digress...
So how did Praveen Monahan crack the mystery of the red door? Buy doing the work. He built a working model, ran it, and began to discover things. First as he began building his model, he ran into questions. Why 2 "Earth's" around the sun? And why the difference in distance?
The difference in the distance between the 2 Earths, the slight "bend" or curvature in the lines connecting the sun to the Earth were keys to understanding Ed's model. It told Praveen to build only one Earth in his model, but it had to move around the sun in an elipse.
By building a model of Ed's drawing on the red door, he realized how earth rotates around the sun is not linked to the center of the sun, but a magnetic spot off-center that the rotation pivots around. You can see the result of a full rotation, almost a circle, but not quite.
The second year around the sun and we can see the path is slightly different, and again on the 3rd rotation around the sun. We're starting to see a pattern, but it's not yet obvious. How did he know the rotation wasn't a circle? It comes down to precision, and time keeping.
Now the mystery of 21 and the red door really opens up. I mean people walked past this for literally decades and no one had a clue. Ed was attempting to measure with high precision "how long is a year?" And to do this, he needed to calculate Earth's extreme points around the sun.
What does Praveen's model look like after he's drawn 21 years? Tell me this is not crazy AF.
I see so many correlations between Satoshi & Bitcoin and Ed Leedskalnin and The Coral Castle. Its fascinating we have a modern-day megalithic structure built by a single man less than a hundred years ago, and a digital monument built of code in cyberspace.
Both Ed and Satoshi made amazing secret discoveries and shared them with the world for free. They built from simple raw materials they had around them, and constructed masterpieces of monumental scale that can weather hurricanes and storms. This is where Coral Castle stands.
Both Satoshi and Ed encoded mathematics, astronomy, and their own homegrown technologies in masterpieces & to create their visions. Against great odds and with little in the way of financial rewards, these men followed their passion and created what no one else would or could.
