The nightingale of India had a wish - to see the return of the TV CID. Here is a thread about a show that ran for over 1500 episodes.
And none of the characters ever got promoted despite solving all cases!
The man behind the TV series is BP Singh who had a successful Marathi series called Ek Shunya Shunya on DD.
While working on that series, he met a doctor who told him - "People lie, but the dead always tell the truth."
That got him interested in cases where forensics were involved. He did all the research and spent more than 4.5 lacs of his personal money and shot 6 episodes of CID in 1992.
The first of these was called Kissa Zahar Ka.
He tried to sell the series to DD first and then Zee. But they did not agree.
In 1995, he got an offer from Sony for a Horror TV series. He produced another iconic series Aahat.
Sony was looking for a police story and BP Singh pitched CID.
Then in 1998, the first 6 episodes shot way back in 1992, were shown on Sony TV.
The public liked what they saw.
This is the first shot of Shivaji Satam from the show.
In the first 6 episodes - he was just Inspector Pradyuman.
The character was named after @mid_day's deputy editor Pradyuman Maheswari. BP Singh did not want a common name and instead chose the journalists name.

Shivaji Satam was very good friends with BP Singh. Satam, in 1992, was a central bank employee who did theater and TV series on the side.
But by 1998 he had become a much sought after actor in films.
So in episode 7, the first shot in 1998 - we see a slightly older Shivaji Satam, being promoted to ACP.
Shivaji Satam had to miss shoots for his film commitments - so a new lead character was introduced.
Inspector Viren was portrayed by Ashutosh Gowariker.
Inspector Viren was quite popular with the audience, but by 1999 - Ashutosh Gowariker had bigger things to do.. Like directing an Oscar nominated classic Lagaan.
So his character was written out.
Kissa Faraar Mujrim Ka was Gowariker's final appearance.
Aditya Srivastava had played a fugitive in the episode 'Kissa Pistol Ki Chora Ka'.
In this episode, he played Paresh, who had been kicked out from his job. He chances upon the gun left by ACP and decides to use that to kill his boss.
Strange I know.
But after the exit of Ashutosh Gowariker, Aditya Srivastava was reintroduced as Inspector Abhijeet in the episode 'Kissa Churaye Hue Dynamite Ka'
Abhijeet was someone who lost his memory after being attacked on the job.
This is the first shot of Inspector Abhijeet.
Interesting bit - the name Abhijeet was given because Shivaji's son in real life is Abhijeet Satam.
BP Singh wanted to show a father-son relationship between ACP Pradyuman and Abhijeet.
Dayanand Shetty was a shot put and discuss thrower and Maharashtra state champion in 1996. But an injury turned him to acting.
BP Singh, impressed by his build and personality, made him a permanent character - Daya.
First appearance in the episode The Stalker.
Dayanand Shetty kicking doors open didn't happen instantly. It took over 50 episodes for that to happen.
In our opinion, this is the first time ACP utters the words "Daya Darwaza Thod Do" in the episode Kissa Bandh Darwaze Ka. Appropriate.
Check out Shivaji Satam's beard here.
The dialogue has become so iconic - it has been referenced in Singham returns.
When Amol Gupte locks up the door, Bajirao Singham says the line "Daya Darwaza Tod" and Senior Inspector Daya duly obliges.
Though core to the story, the forensic expert for the series was not finalized. In the first few episodes, we see this actor as the forensic expert.
In fact, Narendra Gupta, most famous as Dr Salunkhe played a vada pav seller who had witnessed a murder.
Narendra Gupta's first foray as the forensic expert was in the episode - The case of the incomplete letter.
He was addressed as Dr Verma. But few episodes later, his name was changed to Dr Salunkhe.
CID had a long list of writers.
Shridhar Raghavan, who wrote Khakee, Dum Maaro Dum wrote some of the early episodes.
Shridhar's brother Sriram Raghavan, started writing CID episodes before moving on to write and make films like Badlapur, Jhonny Gaddar and Andhadhun.
CID had some records to its name - it was among the longest running fictional crime shows on TV.
An episode titled 'Inheritence' was a single shot episode of 111 minutes.

Aditya Srivastava as Ashfaq Ali Khan, Dayanand Shetty as Hanuman Pandey starred in a sort of spin off show called CIF.
It was shown on Dangal TV and is set in Lucknow. It had many cast from CID appear as characters including Dinesh Phadnis, who is famous as Freddie on CID.
Other writers, characters, actors were all involved in more than 20 years run of the show.
What if Sony never agreed to BP Singh in the first place...
