The best way to assess talent in hiring is structured interviews. To do it:
1) Identify skills & traits you need
2) Ask about past behavior around those
3) Follow-up with probing questions
4) Ask everyone the same thing

And remember that puzzle questions, brainteasers & other nonsense are not useful and say more about you than the interviewee.
Avoid unstructured interviews where you ask each candidate different questions and have no preset evaluation criteria.
This leads to people making worse hiring choices (with high levels of confidence!) than if they just used intelligence test scores to pick and never interviewed
