For 30+ years I was depressed and hated myself.
Trauma therapy has forever altered the way I see myself.
This thread will change your life if you or anyone you know has trauma.
IFS (Internal family systems) is a talk trauma therapy.
It has nothing to do with your outside family.
It is the family of voices or “parts” inside your head.
So in this explanation, I will call each voice in your head a “part.”
We all have different parts of our personalities.
We have loving parts & challenging parts… But there are NO BAD PARTS. (read the book)
We will find out why later.
Some parts we are aware of, and some we are not.
These parts are a part of you but they are not YOU.
What are you? Great question. You are simply the light of your consciousness.

At the time of a traumatic event, a part of your psyche breaks off & is created.
That part is created to protect you.
When I was young I was in a scary environment.
Part of my psyche was created to be afraid.
It keep me safe as I would hide & stay small when chaos started.
So as a kid, the FEAR part of my psyche kept me safe.
But the little boy grew up.
What happened to my FEAR part?
It’s in your subconscious mind.
If you do not resolve it, they stay and “do their job.”
My FEAR part “did its job” by:
In elementary school, I was terrified to ask my first crush out.
In middle school, I didn’t join the basketball team.
In high school, I avoided all people.
As an adult, I stayed in abusive jobs.
It kept me afraid, it worked hard too.
So why did I say there are “no bad parts”
You may have caught on. This part saved my life as a child.
It loved me SO much that it did what it had to do.
Like a tourniquet, it wasn’t good but it was better than dying.
BIG REVEAL
These parts still think they are helping you today.
Showing up to work. Making you scared, depressed, anxious…
No one told them to stop.
They are like a misguided best friend.
They think they are saving our life.
They aren’t bad.
They love you.
This mental shift can change everything for you.
Your self-hate, procrastination, lack of purpose, fear, guilt, desperation, & anxiety are all trying to keep you safe.
None of this is hate. It is all misguided love.
Your parts deeply love you. You are just doing it wrong.

How does IFS work?
So you get in a meditative state with a good therapist then you try and talk with those parts.
You ask questions & try to conjure up past feelings, in your body.
Sometimes you get no response & it feels stupid.
A few powerful times you DO get answers from your subconscious.
I am secular & these moments felt otherworldly.
You listen to your young damaged parts. (They usually have an age)
They need to be heard & understood.
You regain their trust.
Convince them it is safe now.
Then Integrate them into your mind.
Once you heal a damaged part it often does the opposite of what it did before.
Your biggest hater will become your biggest fan.
I hated myself my whole life. Once I healed that part, I started to love myself.
There were tears that day.
Be brave and get help. It is not easy but it can be done.
All you have to gain is your entire life, complete freedom, and internal happiness.
