A lot of people who have problems with their gut don't know it.
They have symptoms like acne, low energy, dry skin and brain fog but don't associate them with gut health.
Here's 5 common symptoms of poor gut health that get mistaken for something else.
THREAD 🧵
1. Brain fog
This is a common symptom across many issues with gut health.
Experiencing brain fog might be an indicator of leaky gut, bacterial/fungal overgrowth, IBD, IBS, celiac, nutrient deficiency or many other issues related to gut health.
What's the common link between all of these? They're usually associated with dysbiosis.
This is when the microbes in your gut microbiome fall out of balance.
And due to the strong gut-brain axis, it often leads to brain fog.
2. Skin problems
Acne, rashes, dry skin, itching, etc. can be symptoms of problems in your stomach.
Usually either from inflammation or microbiome imbalance (or both).
When the lining of your gut is weak, it allows toxins to leak from your gut to your bloodstream (leaky gut).
This leads to inflammation in the body.
Those toxins & inflammation can cause acne & rashes to develop on your skin.
The health of your skin is also highly dependent on the balance of the bacteria in your gut.
Microbiome imbalance can cause dry skin, breakouts, itching & more.
3. Fatigue
Many gut issues like celiac and leaky gut cause inflammation. When your body is inflamed it's requiring more energy than is available in your cells resulting in fatigue.
Gut problems also commonly disrupt your sleep due to hormone disruption and persistent symptoms.
Another cause can be nutrient deficiencies caused by malabsorption or pathogen overgrowth like SIBO.
Deficiencies in certain nutrients like iron, vitamin D or B vitamins can cause serious fatigue.
4. Anxiety/depression
The main link between poor gut health and anxiety depression is through the gut microbiome.
The microbes in your gut help regulate neurotransmitters.
When the microbiome falls into dysbiosis, it disrupts this process and cause anxiety or depression.
Another way that gut health can cause mental health issues is deficiencies.
Deficiencies in B vitamins, omega-3s, vitamin D, magnesium and amino acids have been associated with anxiety and depression.
Many gut issues can cause malabsorption, which leads to these deficiencies.
5. Frequent sickness
Over 70% of your immune system is in your gut.
The diversity and composition of your gut microbiome strongly affects the strength of your immune system.
The bacteria in your gut assist immune cells in fighting off pathogens & keeping you healthy.
And this is a two-way street. If your immune system is weak, it can negatively impact your gut health.
And poor gut health can negatively impact the immune system opening you up to sickness more frequently.
It's important to optimize both.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, your gut health may be the cause.
This list also isn't all-inclusive.
There are many symptoms of an unhealthy gut that get mistaken for something else.
So as a general rule, always approach your health holistically.
