Tools like ChatGPT won't make you a better academic.
Skills WITH the right tools will.
Here is how to culture your skills with the right tools:
👇
1. EXPLORATION SKILLS
Given a broad research question. WHERE do you find the answers?
❌ Old Tool: Google.
My question is: "What drives Biodiversity?", an open question in ecology.
But Google gives me info on Biodiversity loss instead: Not a good tool.
Tool 1: ChatGPT 4
Ask ChatGPT for the "right keywords".
While the free GPT-3 is often good enough, GPT-4 does better with this question.
You can now go ahead and google "Biodiversity + <any suggestion>".
This will give much better results and an idea where to start.
Tool 2: Perplexity
This search engine is like a mix of ChatGPT and Google.
Perfectly suited for asking broad questions and receiving replies with real references.
Tool 3: Litmaps/Zotero/Scite
Once you understood a subject, it's time to read scientific literature.
This workflow will help find the most important papers:
2. NOTE TAKING SKILLS
90% of your academic success is determined by notes.
Notes are bits of a publication in a different order.
Bad notes = difficult publications

3. WRITING SKILLS
Writing is a combination of your notes in a new way.
Not having "writing-ready" notes is like cooking without the right ingredients.
Here is a system I use:
Small hack: Use Quotables a growing repository of writing prompts.
Tool 4: Trinka AI
When it comes time to polishing manuscripts, AI can help:
4. ADAPTATION SKILLS
An artist has no goal.
An engineer has no slack.
An academic has a goal, but no clear way to get there.
An academic is an artist-engineer.
Adapting to this lifestyle of readjusting and staying open is key - details here:
