Low testosterone
You've probably seen 1,000 tweets about this by now
But most of them never explain the most common causes of low T
Let me show you what that is and how I increased my testosterone by 55% in 3 months
THREAD 🧵
There are many factors causing the low testosterone epidemic today
An extremely overlooked cause is gut health
Leaky gut, dysbiosis & intestinal inflammation are often associated with low testosterone
75%+ of the population deals with these things
Here's how I fixed my low T
A. Gut health
Inflammation is often caused by or leads to dysbiosis, which often leads to leaky gut
And leaky gut often leads to chronic inflammation
It's a vicious cycle that leads to lower and lower testosterone
Both acute and chronic inflammation are associated with lower testosterone
Dysbiosis and leaky gut are two of the most common causes of intestinal inflammation
Dysbiosis describes an imbalance in the gut microbiome and leaky gut is when toxins leak from your gut into your blood
Normally, your gut allows water & nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream
When you have leaky gut, other things like toxins and partially digested food pass through as well
This causes inflammation, oxidative stress, and lower LH production which all lower testosterone
Inflammation, dysbiosis, leaky gut & other gut issues can be caused by many things
It can start with something as simple as low stomach acid or eating too fast
Other things like nutrient deficiencies, excessive stress, pathogen overgrowth and poor diet are also common causes
My gut healing & optimization protocol is as follows:
1) Confirm issues through testing
2) Diet & lifestyle detox
3) Address issues from step 1
4) Fill in the gaps to optimize for resiliency
5) Find a long-term sustainable diet & lifestyle that maintains optimal gut health
Whether or not poor gut health is the main cause of your low testosterone or not, optimizing your gut health will do wonders for testosterone levels
Here are some threads I've posted on this process
Once I resolved my gut health issues, I started focusing on some other tools to boost my testosterone
The first was 👇
B. Sprints
Shorts bursts of sprinting can increase your testosterone significantly
Several studies showed as much as 35% increase from full-speed sprinting
The mechanism for this is believe to be the body’s release of a variety of hormones that break down energy stores adrenaline & cortisol and also help build and repair muscles and bones like testosterone
But there's an important distinction: short bursts not long-distance running
I didn’t get fancy with it. I literally just did simple 20-second sprints
I’d do it on the beach, grass, concrete, track or anywhere I had access to
And I’d do 6 sets of down and back 20-second sprints
I did this 3-4 times a week for 12 weeks straight.
C. Optimize sleep
Most of the daily testosterone release for men happens during sleep
One study showed even just 1 week of poor sleep led to a 15% decrease in testosterone levels
Skipping sleep reduces testosterone by the same amount as aging 10 to 15 years
Pretty crazy
If you sleep less than 7-8 hours a night, your testosterone is negatively impacted
Focusing on increasing the amount and quality of your sleep will have a powerful impact on testosterone levels
At one point, my sleep was so messed up I could only sleep like 4 hours a night
My sleep was so bad I'd wake up 4 hours after going to sleep no matter what time I went to bed
Every night
Here’s some helpful things I did to optimize my sleep:
- strict sleep schedule
- no phone 1 hr before bed/after waking
- sunlight in morning, mid day & sunset
- exercise early
- block artificial blue light
- unwind before bed
- make room as dark / cool as possible
As I mentioned above, there have been some studies done that illustrated these benefits
And I was able to confirm these myself IRL
These 3 things are the only changes I made between my first testosterone measurement of 536 and second measurement of 833 three months later
These 3 things might not be the main cause of your low T
But if you’re dealing with low T, focusing on these things will help
The best part? They’re all free and easy to implement
