/ On the day the news broke that we face passing the 1.5c ‘limit’ for global warming, we released our update for the Thames Estuary plan to protect London from coastal flood risk. The headline - we’re bringing forward our plans by 15 years given the pace of sea level rise 🧵….
/ The Thames Barrier and other flood defences in London currently protect 1.4 million people and masses of infrastructure - plus four world heritage sites…
/ A quick scan of what and where would flood in London without the current flood defences….
/ Sea level rise makes London (and many major cities) vulnerable to surges and coastal flood risk. Our Thames Estuary 2100 plan adapts our response to the very latest evidence. Today I had the privilege to be part of the launch of the latest update…..
/ The evidence of how sea level rise is increasing means we’ll be bringing forward our plans by 15 years to raise London’s flood defences. Detail of the plan here gov.uk…..
/ But those changes aren’t imminent. The beauty of this plan it gets us ready for what is to come rather than making changes in response to a major disaster. The last time central London flooded from the Thames - 1928. A wonderful Pathe news reel here… images.app.goo.gl
/ This type of innovative plan needs great science, great imagination - but above all great partnerships - so let’s end with a selfie showing all those involved (my first selfie with a Baroness I think!) Great work @TE2100Plan team 😊@baroness_brown
