Have you ever had a profound insight and then looked at the clock to see 11:11?
Maybe you can remember thinking about someone and then they called you the next minute?
Just coincidences, right?
Well, these experiences are referred to as “synchronicity” by Carl Jung…
In one of Jung’s therapy sessions, he was dealing with a serious, highly-educated, and rational woman.
Jung knew that if he was going to get through to her, something “irrational” would have to happen - an unexplainable coincidence.
One day Jung’s patient was...
…describing a dream she had.
She discussed a significant dream about a golden scarab (expensive piece of jewelry in the shape of a beetle).
As she was describing this, there was a slight tapping on the window behind Jung.
Jung got up and opened the window.
To his astonishment, when the window swung open, he saw a golden/greenish scarab beetle not native to the area.
He grabbed the beetle, walked it over to the lady, and said:
“Here is your beetle.”
This event had been so impactful on the woman that she was from that moment onward open-minded to Jung’s assertion that the external world (physical/materialistic) is connected to the internal world (mental/consciousness).
So, what’s going on here?
Well, first off, the word “synchronicity” derives from the word “syn” (together in Greek) and "khronos" (time in Greek).
So, existing or occurring at the same time.
Jung defined this term as:
- “acausal connecting (togetherness) principle,”
- “acausal parallelism”
- or  “meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved.”
He essentially believed chance wasn't behind all events.
Instead of chance, Jung thought these strange occurrences where things coincided, were directly related to the observer’s mind, and serve to provide powerful insight, direction, and guidance.
Think of it like a wink from the Universe.
Here are all the ways that synchronicity can manifest:
-Dreams
-Symbols
-Numbers
-Conversations
-“Random” events
-Spontaneous encounters
To dive even deeper, Jung believed these signs were guidance for fulfilling your potential and connecting with your inner self.
Jung believed that one could train and develop a strong ability to recognize these signs.
“Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see.”
This ability is developed through increasing one's awareness.
With a heightened awareness and the subsequent recognition of synchronicity, you are better able to navigate the turbulent waters of life.
Many are lost at sea...
This idea may aid you in staying on course.
By recognizing synchronicity, you can not only be provided with greater motivation because you feel like you are more “locked in,” but you will also be able to increase your chances of meeting significant people, uncovering new ideas, and opening doors to self-actualization.
Now, could Jung be wrong about all this?
Could everything just be a coincidence?
Maybe, but...
Considering we obviously don’t have all the answers as humans, and we find out we were wrong about things in the past all the time, it’s a good idea to keep an open mind here.
So, how might you apply this idea to your life?
USEFUL KNOWLEDGE:
-Align yourself with a goal. Aim as high as you can with your goal. Then head down the path toward that goal. Along the way, do as best as you can to look for clues and signs. When you spot strange coincidences, consider what you had just been thinking about prior to recognizing the synchronicity, this may give you some insight into the importance of your thoughts (or just think about the event at large and what it may be connected to).
This can be difficult to do, especially when it comes to interpreting these signs: “Am I on the right path?” or “Is this sign trying to get me to wake up and head in a different direction?” Sometimes it’s unclear. But consider these synchronicities communication in some way that you are awake and are being aided in some manner.
This is how I interpret them anyway. You can look up what all the signs mean on the internet, like the differences between certain repeated numbers; 11:11, 5:55, 3:33, etc. but everyone tells you something different, so the most logical thing to do in my opinion is to think about what you were just thinking about prior to seeing the number (generally you’ll have a weird feeling before seeing the number too), and then examine those thoughts. Again, this could all be coincidence, I am willing to let that be a reality, but it sure as hell seems like there’s more going on…
If you have any thoughts on this idea, please share them, this is a matter that seems to not be well-understood.
