So, is it the Rashomon Effect? Apparently not. Rashomon effect generally applies to ordinary folks. The folks peddling their ideological views are not likely to fall within that category. Hanlon's Razor does not apply here too, since they are not expected to make errors.
A better model, to understand the underlying pattern, is the 4 Quadrant Model of Media Manipulation, developed by @EricRWeinstein . I have added a Gangs of Wasseypur twist for fans of the movie.
Watch an amazing explainer on this model by @JakeOrthwein here - youtu.be
Coming back to the case of an example of 1 extremist (let's assume for the time being) being MARKED as a member of the opposite group, and the subtext is - a) fear them, come to papa and be a pawn, and b) ordinary folks! you can't stay quiet. if you do, you are a bigot/enemy.
Right now, 2 opposing sides are doing this in this particular case (there may be more). Remember! These narrative peddlers use 'Sweeping Generalization' as an important tool in their arsenal
Use of Sweeping Generalization for what? For shoring up the number of pawns in category 1 by showing how bad the BIG BAD is, and pushing ordinary folks to become pawns by implicitly threatening them (à la 'silence is violence'), and pushing them (cont.)
(cont.) towards category 3 by making them become reactionary. The more reactionary people Category 1 folks find, the more better it is for them. They will say something like - "See! We told you that the BIG BAD is everywhere. Join us to feel secure."
The funny thing is that the so-called BIG BAD often turns out to be a mere domestic cat 🐈🐈🐈. But that does not stop them from making the next BIG BAD.
