In an interview yesterday, a shaikh claimed that a sign of the times is homosexual marriages.
The hadith condemns "nikah between a man and a man" and "nikah between a woman and a woman."
He argues that the term "nikah" here is referring to marriage and not intercourse. 1/4
He then quotes a tertiary source and makes the claim that the narration is authentic.
However, upon returning to one of the secondary sources quoted, al-Bayhaqi states that the narration is weak. In fact, it contains a liar, Abdullah bin Mohammad al-Adawi.

Moreover, the narration contains evidence that it isn't about marriage contracts, but about intercourse, since the report starts off condemning "nikah in the behind." Context is key here since if the intention from the narration is "marriage" a different word would be used.

Moral of the story is to be cautious with narrations, even when used as evidence for Islam. Just because someone has a scholarly demeanor doesn't mean that you should trust them completely. There is never a harm in returning to the sources yourself. 4/4
