A few weeks ago - I was in Sri Lanka for a short holiday break. Here is a thread about my observations about the country. I accept this is purely on the basis of what I was able to observe as a short term tourist - but still tells us a lot about the country. A thread:

Roads in SL were nearly at par with any developed country - even in the interior parts of SL. Lane markings and stripes were kept up to the mark almost everywhere. Lanes, shoulders marked meticulously and street signs very clear. Hardly any potholes to speak of.

99.9% drivers obeyed the solid / broken center line convention when overtaking. Even within cities.
Signals working properly and more importantly people obeying them nearly 100% of the time. No confusion about which signal for turning left or right.

If there are three signals for L/R/Straight - each had their own countdown indicator so there was no confusion (hey @PMCPune - you should check that out). Separate turn lanes carved out appropriately. Clear signs to indicate lane mergers.

Did not see a single 2-wheeler rider without a helmet - driver and pillion - both. This on even the loneliest stretches of the roads. Lane and speed limit discipline was astonishing.
All this was about traffic. Even cleanliness was super impressive.

We did not see garbage littered absolutely anywhere - not in cities, not along highways and not in villages. Even the flower shops outside temples had no waste around them in spite of having heaps of flowers and leaves. No paper scraps - nothing. It was nearly unbelievable.

Public washrooms at tourist attractions were spotlessly clean - as if in a 5* hotel. Something we arr not used to in India.There are a lot of things we can learn from Sri Lanka - I hope they come out of their economic lull soon and progress much more. They deserve it.
