Amazon Did $514 Billion in Revenue in 2022
But they didn't make a profit for the first 7 years, as a listed company.
Why? Bezos believes in experimenting and failing fast.

Fire Phone
Amazon's smartphone, released in 2014 was intended to offer media streaming.
The venture failed, resulting in a $170 million loss for Amazon.
It was unable to compete with iPhones and Androids.
At one point Amazon tried selling it for 99 cents.

Pets(dot)com
Pets(.)com was an online pet food retailer founded during the dot-com bubble in 1998.
At its peak, it was valued at over $3.3 billion.
Amazon took a 54% stake in its first round of venture funding.
The company went bankrupt in 2000.

Askville
A Q&A site, Askville was launched in 2004.
Similar to Yahoo & Google Answers, but users were encouraged to answer questions through a gamified process.
Their user base decreased when it stopped using a game-like system and moderation.
It was closed in 2014.

Amazon Destinations
This travel service was launched in 2015.
The service offered package deals for vacations, but it failed to compete with established travel websites like Expedia and Orbitz.
Amazon Destinations was closed in less than 6 months.

Endless. com
Amazon's first standalone online-shopping brand, launched in 2007, focused on shoes and accessories.
The site was criticized for its cluttered design and its lack of features.
Endless .com closed in 2012 after failing to gain traction.

Amazon Auctions
An online auction site, Amazon Auctions was launched in 1999.
The site was intended to compete with eBay
It didn't. Amazon Auctions was closed in 2006.

A search portal developed by Amazon, launched in 2004.
The search engine was intended to compete with Google. It failed to gain market share.
It was discontinued in 2008.
On the good side, this paved the path for the current search algorithm of Amazon.
