in tales across the world you find a person who loses one eye, then gains a type of spiritual sight. odin for example, has one eye the woman below also has one eye. despite her appearance, she lived in wisconsin, and played a role in the worst wildfire in american history: ...
adele brise was born in belgium in the 1830s, and lost her right eye as a child. after her first communion she took an oath to become a religious teacher in belgium. plot twist: her family moved to america. after six weeks they arrived in wisconsin, and moved into this house:
here in the 1850s she saw the virgin mary, and spoke with her. you can see in this glass image she appeared between a maple tree and hemlock tree. perhaps this is symbolic, hemlock being poison, and maple trees giving forth a type of nectar. or maybe she was just standing there.
almost 12 years to the day after this, the great peshtigo fire happened. some say this was the world wildfire in US history, killing 1.2 - 2.4 thousand people and burning over a million acres. the people here fled to the chapel and ground they had consecrated to this vision.
the people here stayed up all night, and survived. a guy named father pernin described tongues of flame licking the outside walls, "...but the convent, school, and chapel on the holy land consecrated to the Virgin Mary shone like an emerald isle in a sea of ashes." later:
today, theres a shrine here called our lady of champion. not sure most people know theres a marian apparition this early in america's history. when speaking with adele, mary referred to america as "this wild country". i guess in a way that makes this designation canonical cool
