This is basically a filler word, with other examples such as: uhm, like, so, enh
And as a host, it was something I didn't want to have to struggle with on-stage
So in this thread, I will share why these occurrences happen and how I have been curtail them
Walk with me πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
We make use of filler words in two instances
The First; when we run out of what/things to say
The Second; when we become uncomfortable with the silence
And the simple way to go around these, is to address these two root causes
When you talk fast, real fast...
your mouth begins to work faster than your brain, so once you've exhausted what your brain has been able to conjure, you're left blank and then employ filler words pending the time your brain provides you with more words to say
The simple hack to this, is to talk slower...
and calmer, not necessarily at a snail's speed but not as fast as you usually will
What this does is allow your brain and mouth to work at the same rate hence you never run out of things to say
The second thing I mentioned was being uncomfortable with silence...
I used to have this same issue before, until I started embracing the silence
So what I do is that I ensure to take pauses in between my talks, I take pauses at key moments, and this also helps my audience articulate what it is I'm talking about
It even adds more composure...
to your speech as it gives room for processing and understanding. So I get comfortable with the silence, embrace it and use it to buttress my point
Another thing I use this silence or pause period to do is to make visual connection with my audience, I make eye contact...
with one or two of my audience while giving my brain enough time to feed my next line to me
Another trick that can help alot is body movement and gesticulation
By default, when you move around the stage, in a coordinated sequence of course or use your hands and body...
to gesticulate, it slows down your speech rate and provide alternative fillers to the filler words
So in summary;
- Speak slower/camly
- Embrace and use the silence
- Gesticulate and communicate with your body
