Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan met a brahmin named Brij Bhukan; he was so pleased to see him that he asked for the derivation of the word "Hindu.".
Brij Bhukan replied “The one who is far away from sin."
Hearing this, Shah Jahan desired that the Brahmin can ask for any favour from him, and it will be granted.
Brij Bhukan replied, “Do me then the favour of never paying me another visit!”
The ancestors of Brij Bhukan suffered persecution at the hands of Mslms around 13th century, and then the family migrated from Mathura to Uch near Multan.
Again his family suffered from persecution from the Mughal army, and then his family settled in Lahore; later, they returned back to Mathura.
Their descendant, "Pandit Brij Lal," who settled in Lahore, became a court Pandit under Maharaja Ranjit Singh to read and explain the Sanskrit books.
After his death, his son, Madhosudan, also served Lahore Darbar. He was appointed Head Priest in 1808 and was given charge of the Charities Department.
Madhosudan was a great scholar, well acquainted with Sanskrit literature; there was no other Pandit like him in Lahore.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh granted title 'Dharamath' to Brij Lal and his heirs.
Pandit Madhosudan was granted 2 gardens at Lahore & Dinanagar (town in Majha Region of Punjab).
Son of Pandit Madhosudan, Radha Kishan became tutor of Maharaja Dalip Singh.
