Haaland’s link up play would improve if he:
1) backed in/pinned/made contact with the CB
2) received standing still
3) used his arms to detect space
4) turned more over his right shoulder (rolling with the ball rather than receiving on left (back) foot).
Let me explain.
Here, Haaland could stay high, pin the CB and roll towards his right hand side. He then has the option of passing to De Bruyne or taking a left footed shot.
Instead, he moves towards the ball and receives with his left (back foot).
Chance missed. No arm out to feel..
Here, there is no need to drop that deep. It is an easy pass for Akanji to make.
If he uses his arms he can feel whether he has space to turn or not then turn & play Doku.
Or receive, under pressure, roll and play Doku.
Stand/receive still instead of on the move..
Same again, stand still and receive - under pressure. Look to pin the CB then the option of a switch to Doku becomes available.
A lot of the time he receives - on the move - running towards the ball and just plays backwards.
He often doesn’t use his size well outside of the box
Look at this example. He has already decided to do his favourite turn (over left shoulder) before receiving the ball. When Doku is in lots of space…
Again, he could receive, pin, roll and pass out wide (left hand side). His arms are down and he doesn’t use the space well.
