When watching Jhon lucumí the first thing you will notice is his calmness on the ball. He plays the game at his own pace never seems rushed. He embodies control and ironically is a pace and power type of player as well. He likes to attract pressure to him self often waiting for the defender to dive in before releasing the ball. In turn this creates more space and time for his team mates. He definitely has a natural pausa to his game and rarely seems to loose the ball or misplace a pace completing on average 73 successful passes per game with a 92% pass completion rate. That is near perfect.
Lucumi is an aggressive front footed defender. He’s an amazing duller ranking in the top 1% for defensive duels won in Europe. He uses his height and size to his advantage, physical dominating the attacker. He tends to jump out at his attacker sometimes trying to catch them out when they revive their first touch. Always trying to initiate contact and bully the opposition . He’s also a decent tackler ranking in the 74% percentile for tackles completed.
Jhon is a retention first type of player. Even when his receives the ball in tight positions at the back his first thought is always to play it out of trouble rather than clear the ball and loose possession. His first thought is always how to help his team progress the ball calmly and systematically rather than making erratic decisions. This doesn’t mean how ever he doesn’t clear the ball he has good awareness of his surroundings due to his constant scanning and isn’t afraid to kick the ball out of play. It just isn’t his first option.
By far lucumí’s best attribute is his progressiveness. He is a technical gifted player who can progress the ball ridiculously, the definition of a line breaking passer always looking to find his teammate beyond the press and most times to his striker. Time and time again constantly looking to get the ball beyond the press wether by going long or keeping it short. He boasts a 94.8% pass completion rate in short passes, 97% pass completion rate in medium passes and 73.3% completion rate In long passes. That being said he is definitely a good carrier of the ball ranking in the top 6%. He uses his tall stocky frame making powerful strides up the pitch. His strength allows him to shrug off attackers as he carries the ball through the center of the pitch or down the left hand side depending on his positioning in the build up.
What is his role for Bologna?
In the build up. Jhon is the lCB for Bologna. The keeper often passes the ball to him or his partner (RCB). When this happens, one of them inverts into the midfield ( a libero) and most times it is Lucumi.
Some times both defenders invert into midfield. With this happening it’s clear to assume that Lucumí is good at receiving the ball with his back to play and that is 100% the case. His scanning and awareness is amazing almost like a natural dm. He does this to involve the keeper as the extra man or create a passing lane from the keeper to the lb or vice versa.

This also happens further up the pitch as well he sometimes, inverts after a long ball from the opposition team to serve as a passing option between the lines, this helps to nullify the press and pin the opposition team back down they can have more space and time and create more chances.
He also does this after passing the ball to his lb to create a passing lane for the lb into the RCB. All these rotations are not just for show. They all help to give his teammates time and space on the ball. It also makes the opposition second guess about whether to press or to stay over all distrusting their rhythm.
Yes the manager ( Thiago Motta) has instructed this to occur but it takes large skill and iq for the players to execute this perfectly on a regular and consistent basis.

With these rotations he sometimes receive the ball as a situational left back and when this occurs, he progresses the ball down the line via carrying before releasing to his teammates. He ranks in the top 6%for progressive carries and completes on average 1.50 successful carries per game.
Further up the pitch the trend continues. One of the CBS (often lucumí) inverts into the dm position to allowed more players to be pushed up front. This allows them to sustain more attacks and also puts him in a good position to engage a counter press if possession is loss. He is front footed defender who loves to engage from the front which is really valuable in the modern game.
On the flip side, lucumí is very capable of being the last man. His pace and power valuable assets and his composure to twist away from on coming pressure is always useful and he is tidy in possession.
He is a very capable Chanel defender and uses his pace and strength to his advantage. He doesn’t tend to dive in but when he does he makes sure he gets the ball.

When defending in a low block,( though Bologna are usually a high pressing side) Jhon is usually the LCB in a back for but due to his vertically and his use of both feet, he is capable of playing as a RCB and a LB to a very good level.
As said before he is an aggressive cb who likes to jump out at his attacker and initiate contact. A very front footed defender. Due to his pace however, he is also able to be a cover defender.

I would have him at Man Utd but what do you think? Would you have him at your club? Let me know in the comments.
