The news of Parameswaravarman attaining Veera Swargam reached the capital Kanchipuram. The next in line Chithiramayan was not favoured by the citizens as he was notorious (even in those days there were notorious princes)
Hence the ‘Mulaprakritis’ of Kanchipuram headed by the Chief minister Darani Konda Posar (on the extreme right) went to South East Asia and asked Hiranyavarman, who was from the Pallava lineage, to accept the crown

Hiranyavarman declined the offer. But the Pallava delegation was not relenting. Finally Hiranyavarman suggested that one of his four sons, Sri Mallan, Ranamallan, Sankrama mallan & Pallavamallan can be made as the King provided they agree. (Note the SEA features of Hiranyavarman)

Al the four sons came forward, first three declined the offer like their father

The fourth son who was 12 years old, agree to take up the responsibility & prayed before his parents. Hiranyavarman reluctantly agreed.

Thus a new lineage of Pallava royal family was formed. Pallavamalla was crowned as Nandivarman II & became one of the longest ruling kings of Indian history.
So people had to the power to decide the king even during monarchy.
