A Thread of American Anti-Catholic Cartoons:
The USA has a long history of deep-rooted Anti-Catholic bias. Here is a brief look at this prejudice in the form of propaganda throughout the 19th and 20th centuries
To begin, Anti-Catholicism was imported from the Old World by English speaking protestants, like the Puritans. Celebrations like Guy Fawkes Night evolved into Pope Night in New England, where an effigy of the Pope is processed and burned (pictured)
As the new nation formed as an identity at the beginning of the 19th century, Catholics were viewed by many Americans as untrustworthy due to their supposed ties to a foreign government (the Papal States and later, Vatican City).
Due to most Catholics being foreigners, Anti-Irish, Italian, German, and Polish sentiment was associated with Anti-Catholicism. Pictured here is a sterotypical depiction of an Irish-American (goes hard).
Along with accusations of untrustworthness, accusations of sexual debauchery, and greed by clergy were common, too. Most WASPs firmly believed that the Catholic Church sought to censor the Bible and subvert the public schools as well.
Now, with some context established, let's begin the image dump!
"NOTHING IS BEYOND OUR REACH"
How the Church will meddle in US politics, with a focus of Al Smith, the first Catholic presidential nominee.
More government meddling themed ones. A lot of Catholic immigrants were members of the Democrat Party, which led to tensions in the party between Catholic immigrants and WASP southerners.
More involving government meddling or the Church abusing the government for personal motives.
Thankfully, the Ku Klux Klan is here to stop them!!!
There is a lot, and I mean A LOT, of these centers on fears of Catholics subverting public schools or trying to make Catholic schools unconstitutional.
Grant's presidency brought about the failed Blaine Amendments that sought to cut all governmental aid to religious schools and had an explicit Anti-Catholic bias. Though failed, the legacy and mindset of the amendment lived on and attempts to remove Catholic schools persisted
More "they are in our schools" themed cartoons
Of all things, the KKK and other WASPs criticized the Church for "intolerance", censoring the Bible and misogyny (???)
The Church is very scared of the Klan apparently lol
trust me bro very scared....
Final dump of miscellaneous ones.
Thank you for reading~
