Masvingo people, our reputation is so messed up. This is so bad and heartbreaking πŸ’”
So this is what happened:
A man was married to a woman who from Zaka, Masvingo, and they had 3 children. The last born is 17. His wife got sick and passed away
and the in-laws from Zaka were called over the phone about the devastating news. This is where all hell breaks loose. The in-laws said we will not come over to the funeral because you have told us about the news OVER the phone. We need a messenger to come over physically
Hanzi "tinoda kusumiwa". Someone had to travel and go physically to talk to the in-laws that is the moment they agreed to attend the funeral. Now at the funeral, they locked the door to the body of the deceased saying "no one enters into this room until we are paid our dues"
The dues:
2 x oxen: to mark the grave (kutara guva)
1 x cow: because you told us about the funeral over the phone
2 x oxen: for meat during the funeral
1 x cow: to take out the deceased from the room she was (kubudisa mufi mumba)
In total, they demanded 6 beasts of cattle
They caused a scene and delayed burial for two days with outrageous demands. People at the funeral were pissed off, the husband to the deceased wife was so heartbroken and confused. As if that was not enough, the in-laws took everything and shared among themselves from TVs, sofas
beds, clothes, room dividers, blankets, pots and pans, plates, literally everything was taken and shared among the in-laws EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE KIDS there, of the deceased, as well as the husband of the deceased. They left them with nothing and went back to Zaka.
This was literally last week, early July 2024. Yesterday, 10 July 2024, a week after the funeral, the kids were still mourning, the husband of the deceased couldn't take it anymore, and he committed suiΒ£ide πŸ’” 😒.
I am so heartbroken. I am speechless and very sad. This is not
the image l want at all from my people from Masvingo. Are they happy now the in-laws that they made life a literal living hell for their own grandchildren? How will the kids love you after this? The notion that "relatives from the mothers side are kind" doesn't apply here at all
If we do not change those archaic beliefs and inconsiderate cultural beliefs, then we will have a problem branding ourselves as Masvingo people. The culture is alright but the greed is messed up. Those things were done as symbols, they could have demanded goats and chickens. But
because of greed, they went further and took everything. Now, the children are orphans and are gonna bury both their parents in the same month of the same year, 1 week apart. This is pure evil, heartless, and witchcraft behavior. May the souls of the departed rest in peace πŸ’”πŸ’”
