Hb THRESHOLDS TO DEFINE ANEMIA
I tweeted a poll earlier today asking whether you would investigate an otherwise healthy 55 yo M with Hb 13.1.
So far about 600 have responded, with 30% saying YES they would investigate.
Depends on how one defines anemia!

I have always taught medical students and physicians-in-training the WHO cutoffs (1968 and 2024):
Adult men 13 g/dL
Adult non-pregnant females 12 g/dL
Pregnant females < 11 g/dL
Yet our OMR uses a cutoff of 13.7 g/dL for men and 11.2 g/dL for women (below is my CBC)!

Moreover, time and time again, when I ask medical students many answer with a cutoff of 13.5 g/dL for men and 12 g/dL for non-pregnant women.
