Article says Guru Purnima was originally a Buddhist festival stolen by Hindus
Some facts
1) The word "Guru Purnima" is not found in ANY Buddhist scripture
2)Nowhere in the whole Pali canon is it mentioned that Buddhist gave his first sermon on this day
thewire.in
The article begins by saying "Hey, Hindu schools admit students all round year, no single day was marked for admission. So Guru Purnima must not be a Hindu festival"
Even today, many schools admit students all round the year. Do those schools not have a teachers day? Seriously?
Article says it was Buddhists who originally considered Guru Purnima to be beginning of season of Varsha. I challenge author and @thewire_in to produce a single statement from Pali Canon which says "Guru Purnima is beginning of Varsha".
This article is pure anti-Hindu fiction
So, what are the origins of Guru Purnima? It is true that the word "Guru Purnima" does not occur in Vedas. It is mentioned in Puranas like Varaha Purana. That does not mean it is recent.
The prototype of the festival is already found in the Upanishads which predate Buddha
The Purnima of Shukla Paksha of Asadha marked the beginning of Chaturmasa rainy season. In the Chaturmasa, wandering sannyasi teachers stopped wandering and stayed in residences. This is when the disciples took a vow to serve their ascetic teachers. This was Chaturmasa Vrata
