The so called "Akbar fort" was a very important temple site for Hindus before Mughal Emperor Akbar built his fort right on top of it.

The fort has largely remained untouched and it was not open to visitors. From Cunnigham's observations, it appears that a large scale excavation could unearth ancient monuments buried deep inside Akbar fort
This article says Akshayvat was cut down by Mughals 23 times,the first time under Akbar when fort was built.If true, this again reinforces that even during days when Akbar had no official persecution policy,Hindus continued to be persecuted at ground level
