1)Wrong. Guru Granth Sahib IS not written in Punjabi. Most of it is written in a language called Sadhukari or Sant Bhasha, a simplified form of early Hindi.
2) I never said there was no Punjabi identity before 1947. I said there was no Punjabi identity in the Pre-Colonial era.
Hi Tarek Fateh,
This is a snippet from the book "A to Z of Sikhism" written by a renowned Sikh Historian W.H Mcleod who did a scholarly translation of Granth Sahib in English.
Here is what he has to say about it.
This is pretty much the consensus of all scholars of Sikh history
What I actually said-"People of Pre Colonial India didn't identify themselves as Punjabi"
What they claimed I said-"No Punjabi identity before 1947"
If these geniuses don't know difference between "pre 1947" and "pre colonial",I don't think they should be taken seriously at all
The land today known as Punjab was part of two regions known as Waihind and Sirhind. Punjab became political entity under Ranjit Singh.
I challenge @TarekFatah and @HarbirSingh_ to prove their claim by citing atleast one pre colonial writer of Punjab who said "Hey I am Punjabi"
