April 24: a solemn day marking 104 years of denial - Turkey refusing to acknowledge and make amends for the first genocide of the 20th century. The blood of 1.5 million Armenians slaughtered by the Turks continues to cry out for justice. #ArmenianGenocide
From 1914-1918 an est. 1.5 million Armenians were brutally murdered by the Turks - the direct predecessors to the modern state of #Turkey.
Armenians were systematically tortured, robbed, raped, beaten, sent on death marches and murdered all for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. All at the hands of the founders of the state of #Turkey and the world was silent.
No one paid attention when the systematic persecution of Armenians began decades before. Nobody cared about the land seizures, the forced conversions, and the general abuse which was rampant in the Ottoman Empire in the mid 1800s.
In the 1890s there were brutal pogroms against Armenians. Under Sultan Abdul Hamid, 100,000- 300,000 Armenians were murdered, and the round up and murder of 250 Armenian intellectuals on April 24, was the beginning of one of the most horrific atrocities the world had ever seen
Under the Tehcir Law, Armenians were deported en masse – sent on death marches into the Syrian desert, denied food and water. Their land and all belongings were confiscated, and if they survived they were sent to concentration camps, or otherwise “disposed of.
Armenians were publicly humiliated, starved and taunted by the Turks for the purpose of ethnic cleansing.
But instead of #Turkey admitting responsibility and the role of Ataturk in the genocide, Turkey criminalized calling it a genocide (literally), and threatens countries which recognize this humanitarian atrocity.
The world’s indifference to this horrific massacre paved the way for Hitler to carry out his genocide against my people only a few years after.

When the world comes together to say #NeverAgain and #WeRemember, where is our outrage against #Turkey?
Where is our moral compass when year after year Turkey’s refusal to even ACKNOWLEDGE this crime against humanity continues?
Recognize. Remember. Reconcile.
