(I think shell scripting as it currently exists has turned out to be a terrible idea, that this is obvious in 2020, and any serious OS distribution should eradicate all shell scripts. But most people don't seem to care enough, about making software work, to see the point.)
(I mean, it was fine in 1970, when Unix was created. It was maybe even fine in 1980. But by the time I was in college in 1989, it was obviously terrible.)
