Bayern Munich’s most well-known ultra group, Schickeria, has been under criticism due to their protests against Dietmar Hopp & collective punishments.
KH Rummenigge called his ultras “idiots” & “anarchists.”
A reminder who they are & what they stand for.
(Thread, 1/18)
Meet Schickeria München.
Established: 2002.
Known to be in connections with: Ultra Sankt Pauli, Ultras Bochum
Vocal about: Commercialization, fan rights, left-wing politics 2/18
First, some context. Munich is the capital of the German state of Bavaria, where the very conservative CSU, the sister-party to Angela Merkel’s CDU, is by far the strongest political force. 3/18
This is a party whose politicians have been vocal about deporting refugees, securing Germany’s borders and saying Islam is not part of Germany. 4/18
In such a region, in such an atmosphere, the Schickeria are bucking trend.
They have been active for refugee rights & against deportations.
“Afghanistan will be a safe country when the left wing will govern Bavaria!”
“Solidarity instead of resentments. Refugees welcome!” 5/18
Moreover, Schickeria repeatedly voiced their support for NGOs saving lives at sea.
“The criminal is the state, not those saving lives at sea! Saving lives is not a crime!”

Schickeria are also known to take a strong stance against racism.
Here, they voiced their protest against Schalke boss Clemens Tönnies, who expressed racist views about people from Africa.
“Tönnies, one of many! Red card for racists!” 7/18
Another example, in which Schickeria protested against the far-right and its xenophobia.
“Politicians light fire with their words, the mob follows suit! Disgusting racists, we hate you!” 8/18
Another Schickeria stance: Fighting homophobia. 9/18
Schickeria’s most well-known cause: Holocaust remembrance.
The group is responsible for bringing the memory of Kurt Landauer, Bayern Munich’s Jewish president, out of the ashes. 10/18
They contaced writers & historians to understand who he was, how he contributed to the club and how the Nazis persecuted him.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge himself said that in his many years as a player & boss at Bayern, he didn't hear the name before the fans brought it up. 11/18
Then, Schickeria raised a series of choreos in Landauer’s memory. As a result, every Bayern Munich fan knows the name Kurt Landauer, and understands his massive contribution to making the club into what it is today. 12/18
Schickeria were acknowledged by the DFB for their stance on Holocaust remembrance.
In 2014, they won the Julius Hirsch Preis, handed to clubs, players and fan groups that take a stance against racism. 13/18
Apart of their politics, it's worth noting that Schickeria are one of the Bayern Munich groups being vocal in the issue of ticket prices, both in Germany and in Europe. 14/18
Those are the people you’re demanding to kick out of stadiums.
Those are the people you’re calling “idiots.” 15/18
Of course, their political stance doesn’t mean they’re beyond criticism.
I, for one, think their use of the term “son of a whore” is sexist and deserves to be labelled as such, even if it’s a reference to previous protests. 16/18
But I do expect those in charge to understand that even if they don’t see eye to eye with Schickeria and the likes, a level-headed approach is needed to prevent further confrontation with fans who are one of the most positive forces German football has to offer. 17/18
In this thread I explained why I believe it’ll be a fatal mistake to crack down on Schickeria, and other similar groups in Germany, and what could happen as a result of the void created at many German stadiums (hint: society’s shift to the right). 18/18

@FasziFankurve @ultraschoen An early addition: As @BlauGelb13 rightly points out, Schickeria also have connections to Carl-Zeiss Jena's Horda Azzuro, a group known for its antifascist stance.
