2/ The past 3 years have seen the approval of the first treatments to address the root pathophysiology of #sicklecelldisease since the introduction of hydroxyurea in 1998. This is a huge leap in the management of a painful and burdensome illness.
3/ However, experts doubt that they will be realistic options for most patients due to prohibitive cost.
5/ #FoodForThought: What challenges are there to offering, or not offering, expensive treatments for illnesses with otherwise limited treatment options? Is it possible to set an acceptable price tag, or narrow the candidates to whom it's provided? And who should foot the bill?
