That's wrong. D.F. Karaka isn't a real historian. Now here's a real historian, Hugh Kennedy PhD, debunking this.

They kept everything they had, the rulers stayed the same, all that happened was they payed taxes to the Arabs instead of the Sassanian.
In fact they paid less taxes now, and even helped the Arabs.

There wasn't any actual sieges, and much of the local governors just immediately stated making peace with the Arabs without fighting.
The remaining Sassanian armies just ended up switching sides and converted to Islam.

Any city that was not yet under Islamic rule yet, was just abandoned as people preferred to live in the more prosperous newly built Muslim cities.
